Foundation

Isaac Asimov’s ‘Foundation‘ series is one of the greatest pieces of science fiction to have been written and Apple is poised to deliver an ongoing series based off the books. To make sure that they’ve got their bases covered, Apple and Skydance Television have tapped David S. Goyer (‘Krypton’,’Batman Begins’) and Josh Friedman (‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’) as the showrunners for the series. Friedman is fresh off his departure over creative differences from ‘Snowpiercer‘ which has left his schedule wide open for this project.

Apple had snagged the rights to this series back in April but have only now officially placed a 10-episode order for the first season. Also behind-the-scenes, Goyer and Friedman are set to executive produce ‘Foundation’ with Isaac’s daughter Robyn Asimov as well as Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross.

The work was initially published in 1942 and tried to imagine humanity already scattered across the galaxy and ruled by the Galactic Empire. One historian is using new technology to predict upcoming events and feels that the Empire is destined to collapse in the near future and is attempting to prevent all of humanity’s knowledge and history from being wiped out when it does. There are huge twists that come from it for those who have yet to read these classic novels we’ll leave things at that for now.

The series started out as a set of short stories which would grow to encompass eight novels, so if the series proves successful, the creative team will have plenty of material to work from for years to come.

There have been quite a few attempts at bringing a live-action take on ‘Foundation’ into creation but this is the first time it looks to actually be happening.
