The “galaxy far, far away” continues to get bigger and bigger.  Under the watchful eye of new parent company Disney, the Star Wars universe on screens both big and small has grown exponentially; we’ve already been given two new films in a trilogy, one standalone film with another coming in just a few months, and a new TV series on the Disney XD network.

Now, after a recent teleconference call with investors, Disney CEO Bog Iger has revealed that the plans are much more expansive than many people ever thought possible on the small screen.  Said Iger:

“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct-to-consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that. I think you’ll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well.”

From initial reports, it appears that Disney will produce at least one of these series as a streaming-only show to help launch their forthcoming digital-service app.  This news comes on the heels of the announcement that ‘Game of Thrones’ co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be taking reins on a new Star Wars film trilogy.  Even though they’ve long worked in TV, the plan is not for the duo to be involved in any of the new series, Iger mentioned:

“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time. To my knowledge, they didn’t express interest in creating a [television] series. They have an idea for a number of films, and at some later date I’m sure we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there.”

No release dates or content info for any new series has been given as of yet, but we will certainly keep you posted as that info becomes available!
