beetlejuice-no

The Internet was ablaze with rumors earlier that Tim Burton was saying “Beetlejuice” 3 times fast and that soon “It’s Showtime!” with ‘Beetlejuice 2‘ about to be in production. Let’s hold your horses there as even though some outlets were reporting the sequel received a green light, sadly it is not so.

According to a certain site (*Cough*Showbiz  Spy*Cough*), Burton was quoted saying:

“The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”

Sounds great, right? The problem is this may have been stretching the truth a little. By a little we mean that various outlets have received statements from Burton’s representatives completely denying that the quote was ever made or that the film was in development.

Now at this point we know that Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Burton have all stated that they were interested in bringing back The Ghost With The Most. No word on the rest of the cast though. Geena Davis had previously mentioned that “no one’s talked to me about it” and while casting hasn’t officially started quite yet, you could imagine that if they were going to contact her they probably would have by now. Still, I’m sure we can all assume it’s safe to say that at some point ‘Beetlejuice 2’ will happen but currently no studio has given it the go ahead and it is still just an idea.

On the flip side, as excited as I am about the prospect of seeing ‘Beetlejuice’ return, you can’t say that Burton’s track record has been spotless as of late. Perhaps revisiting his old stomping grounds is what he needs to get back to making a film we’ll all love but we also know how iffy the idea of rehashing an old movie can be.
