With his commitments on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘ we know that Colin Trevorrow won’t be able to direct ‘Jurassic World 2‘ and now it sounds like Juan Antonio Bayona is Universal’s top pick for the job.

While Bayona had been rumored to be in the running for the film in September of 2015, that fell through when he signed on to helm ‘World War Z 2‘. However, due to post-production on ‘A Monster Calls‘ looking to take longer than expected he had to drop out of Brad Pitt’s zombie blockbuster and is now in the running once again. Moving from one mega blockbuster to another, it is clear that Hollywood has nothing but praise for what they’ve seen from Bayona behind the camera on both ‘The Impossible’ and ‘The Orphanage’.

With the sequel to ‘Jurassic World’ still scheduled to be released in June of 2018, there is some time to play with finding the right fit. That being said, there is only so much wiggle room with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard having signed on to reprise their roles and also having other films to tackle. With at least two actor’s schedules to keep in mind as well as a pile of post-production and pre-production that will be required, it really isn’t as far off as it currently seems.

While Bayona hasn’t signed a contract as of yet, we do know that producer Frank Marshall has a close relationship with the director which would help the production move forward more smoothly. With the stakes being high, it is clear that the producers will want a director that will share their vision and be easy to work with.

Are you looking forward to ‘Jurassic World 2’? Do you think that Juan Antonio Bayona will be able to deliver a follow up that tops the fun of ‘Jurassic World’ while actually giving us some better character development? Share your thoughts below!
