Fan favorite actor Donald Glover (‘Community’) steps into the spotlight in this new clip from Ridley Scott’s much anticipated new scifi thriller ‘The Martian,’  The film stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars and presumed dead, but once the folks back on Earth discover he is still alive, they must hatch a plan to rescue him.

That’s where Glover’s character, Rich Purnell and his stapler come in.  He quickly rattles off a plan, which sounds kind of like every “slingshot around the sun” plan in several scifi movies, but what the hey.  The movie is getting great advance buzz and is the first real big-budget tentpole-esque movie we’ve seen in months, so in the grand scheme of things, if some of the fake science sounds a bit like other fake science we’ve already seen (and heard), that may be something viewers can overlook.

You can watch Glover explain his rescue plan in the clip below:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.

Though Damon is the real star of the movie, this is a pretty impressive ensemble cast.  In addition to Glover, as you can see in the above clip, the movie also stars Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kristen Wiig as well as Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara and Michael Peña.

It’s still a few weeks from opening, but with September shaping up to be a fairly dreary and non-eventful month at the movies, it’s never to soon to start drumming up attention for this should-be blockbuster.

‘The Martian’ directed by Ridley Scott opens on October 1st, 2015.
