It had previously been reported that the baton has been passed and that ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ was the swan song for the cast of the original X-Men trilogy, making a triumphant return alongside the newer ‘First Class’ cast.  But now it sounds like we might not have seen the last of Ian McKellan’s Magneto or Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier.

During a recent interview with Oregon Live, Stewart stated rather bluntly, “It seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next “X-Men” movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.”

But just because Stewart isn’t going to be in the next ensemble X-Men movie, doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of his Prof. X.  During the same interview, he expressed, “And what I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of ‘X-Men’ from the four movies that I’ve already done.”

The Wolverine‘ went a long way in redeeming that character and his franchise, which was basically DOA with 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’  It was successful enough that a sequel was immediately in discussion.  Would a team up movie with Prof. X work?

As for Ian McKellan’s role, Apocalypse is often embroiled in time travel escapades, so it’s not too farfetched to see how the older Magneto could make an appearance in a movie that otherwise stars Michael Fassbender in the role as a younger Master of magnetism in the 80s.

What do you think?  Are you glad to see the return of the “classic” Professor X and Magneto?  Or do you think the old guards should move aside and let the younger cast take the reigns for good?  Or would you like to see an entire movie starring the original cast, who all returned for a cameo in ‘Days of Future Past’?
