Marvel has been doing a great job of bringing True Believers a variety of different comics featuring diverse and unexpected characters that reinvent the way the audience looks at superheroes. From Matt Fraction’s ‘Hawkeye’ to G. Willow Wilson’s ‘Ms. Marvel’ to Kieron Gillen’s ‘Young Avengers’ and even the recently announced ‘Howard the Duck’ series from Chip Zdarsky, the House of Ideas has no shortage of unexpected surprises for their readers. But then in October, the last Avenger we ever thought we’d see in her own ongoing series received just that as the company announced ‘Unbeatable Squirrel Girl‘ from Ryan North and Erica Henderson. Now, before it hits the shelves of your local comic book store next month, we have an exclusive preview of the series right here!
Similar to the new take on Batgirl by Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher, and Babs Tarr, former Great Lakes Avenger and regular Cage family babysitter Doreen Green finds herself in an all-new adventure in college. But she won’t be at it alone as her trusty sidekick and best friend Tippy-Toe the squirrel joins her for the journey around the Marvel Universe to defeat the biggest baddies around. And to get a little taste of what sort of misadventures these two will be getting into, check out the preview of the first issue in the gallery below:
First of all, how adorable is that theme song? Don’t worry, Squirrel Girl. I’m sure that it’ll catch on eventually. Then, I have to say that I love that Tippy-Toe talks and we understand her. As funny as the whole Chewbacca dynamic is, I’m sure that Ryan North would get tired of writing blocks of dialogue for our hero all the time. Finally, I’m already digging Erica Henderson’s artwork, especially her take on Kraven the Hunter. That big goofy grin is hysterical and I can’t wait to see more gags like it.
What do you think of this first look at ‘Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’ #1? Are you excited to finally get more stories starring the unsung hero that has defeated Deadpool, Dr. Doom, and Thanos? Let us know in the comment section.
