Lucy Griffiths, formerly from ‘True Blood’ was cast as the female lead, Liv on NBC’s ‘Constantine’, an adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic book series ‘Hellblazer.’  Griffiths has already filmed the show’s pilot, clips of which will be shown at San Diego Comic-Con International, but she apparently won’t be back.  She has left the show due to the show’s creators deciding to go in a different direction.

Liv is decribed as “an offbeat woman who finds herself teamed with Constantine after she is marked for death by a powerful demon. With the ability to see the supernatural world among us, she becomes a key player in the battle between good and evil.”

The producers will not recast her role. Rather they are currently casting for the role of Zed, a character from the ‘Hellblazer’ comic book, who will serve as a foil and right-hand woman to Constantine, played by Matt Ryan.  Charles Halford plays Constantine’s other partner Chas Chandler and producers have revealed that other characters from the comic will work their way into the show and they will also be drawing in other supernatural characters from DC.  Hmmmm… in the comics, currently, John Constantine leads ‘Justice League Dark’.  With Guillermo Del Toro’s movie adaptation apparently stalled, will this be a better avenue for bringing those characters to the public?  Who could be in the cards?  Madame Xanadu?  Zatanna?  Swamp Thing?  Dead Man?  Doctor Fate?  The Spectre?  There are dozens of characters that could qualify.  Even the Swamp Thing, the character in whose book Constantine made his debut!

What do you think?  Are you more in favor of sticking closer to the source material?  What characters from DC’s dark side would you like to see on this series?

‘Constantine’ will air at 10 pm eastern on NBC beginning on Oct. 24.
