In ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ we saw Jean Grey (played by Famke Janssen) kill off Professor X and Cyclops. However, in the upcoming sequel ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, we know that Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is making a return to the franchise, but one character that isn’t returning is Cyclops, played by James Marsden (‘X-Men’,’Superman Returns‘). Although he is not in this film, could we be seeing him in other ‘X-Men’ movies?

Marsden was asked if given the chance, would he return to play Scott Summers. “I’ve always been very proud of my role and it’s out of my hands,” he tells Crave Online. “It’s nice to see Bryan [Singer] go back in and turn the boat a little bit. I’m happy for those that made it back. I’d like to. I get excited watching the trailers because I’m excited for the continuance of the X-Men world. I’m a fan of X-Men and I know it’ll be a kick ass movie.”

Cyclops, even the overly militant Scott Summers in the comics, has always been a cornerstone of the X-Men universe. He is the mutant groomed to lead by Professor Charles Xavier and in the comics he is also the man responsible for his death. He was Charles unofficial son and always a fan favorite and important figurehead for the mutants. Now, in the films, he is dead. Of course ‘Days of Future Past’ has the ability to reboot all of that. The question, of course, is will the changes to the timeline do so? Will there be an option for him to return? I hope so.

When asked how he feels about the rate of comic movies coming out and their success, Marden replied:

“I loved being a part of those movies. It was a great group of people. It was rare to get fans excited for a comic book movie, and do well at the box office with films that critics loved, too. I mean nobody doesn’t like them.”

Which is true! I love the fact that he is a fan of the franchise even though he is no longer a part of it.
