The Walt Disney Company (proud owners of Marvel Studios) and Netflix announced back in November a deal to make several shows based on the comic book characters Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. As any Marvel fan can see, the possibility of a Defenders movie can’t be too far behind!

Since this amazing announcement, it’s been fairly quiet as far as more details, confirmations or anything else for that matter. That is, of course, until now. Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada of Marvel Entertainment was a guest on Kevin Smith’s ‘Fat Man on Batman‘ and revealed some very marvelous goodies coming up with Netflix! This is confirmed, people, not from the rumor mill! Plans are to begin filming in New York in the summer. Keeping in tune with Marvel’s expanding Universe, the shows will all be filmed in the same general area, giving us a sense of unity.

“We’re shooting where these characters belong. These stories take place in Hell’s Kitchen…It thrills me to no end to have these things happening in New York. That alone is going to give it an incredible vibe. It’s just once again…it’s like Marvel taking ownership of New York, saying this is where we’re from, this is our universe, this is where it started.”

So, a bit of friendly advice from ScienceFiction.com’s “satellite of Love…” Cancel any plans on moving to New York City. After the Hulk’s recent visit where Banner casually admits to “breaking Harlem” and the Avengers brilliantly averting an epic disaster when the Chitari invaded, that is one city with a huge bulls eye painted on it.

Quesada also answered a burning question on everyone’s minds, and that is whether or not the episodes of each show will be released weekly, like a typical TV series or available all at once like other Netflix original programs. The answer? Well Faithful Followers, set aside some time, because they will be packaged as full seasons instead of individual episodes!

“You’re going to get all these episodes, and you can binge watch them however you want, and then binge watch them again.”

It was said that the approach to these shows will be somewhat different than what we have seen in the past from Marvel Studios. Quesada described The ‘Daredevil’ set as:

“… metaphorically smelling like, “dark alley, vomit, and piss” – much darker than anything we’ve really seen from Marvel Studios thus far. Although these are superhero stories, this is different now. This is the street level…this is the street level noir side of the Marvel Universe. Something that you haven’t really, really seen in any of our Marvel movies. And probably more ground level, than I think you’ve seen. This is not like us doing Batman, ‘Dark Knight’ or any of that stuff. This is Marvel doing street level superheroes.”

The scripts are in progress even as you read this and casting plans will begin soon. And you can bet your “Mighty Marvel Tuckus” we will be here to bring you the news as it happens!
