When Fox first hit it big with the ‘X-Men’ there was a lot of talk about spin-off films until they released the mega-flop that is known as ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. Now, however, they are apparently considering it again.
Lauren Shuler Donner (‘X-Men 2’, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’) has been a producer on the films since the very beginning and recently had a chance to weigh in on part of the future of the cinematic mutant universe while gushing on how much she loves Jennifer Lawrence’s (‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘,’X-Men: Days of Future Past‘) work as Mystique to date ever since she helped reintroduce the character in ‘X-Men: First Class. In fact it was talking about having her do more work that really brought up the idea of more stand alone films the light! Donner revealed:
“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with [Mystique], and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
While a solo film of Mystique could in fact quite mirror the idea of a ‘Black Widow‘ spy film that Marvel is doing, you really have to ask, why stop there?
As long as they don’t have a flop like ‘Origins’ on their hands they could do so many and Lauren has two other key characters in mind.
“There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it. I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”
Gambit and Deadpool are both fan favorites that could easily be put into their own situations. Gambit could easily be shown off as his days in the Thieve’s Guild and Deadpool, there is just so much that can be done with Wade. I just hope that if they do create a new Deadpool on screen that at some point during the middle of the film he talks to the audience and explains that ‘Origins’ never actually happened and has nothing to do with him moving forward.
What do you think of these characters each having a shot at a stand alone movie? Are there any specific story lines that you’d like to see covered if they did go that route? Share your thoughts below!
