A couple of weeks ago, Denzel Washington’s name emerged in connection to ‘Batman Vs. Superman’, with the rumor that Warner Brothers had courted him to play the role of Lex Luthor, but that negotiations fell through.  Idris Elba was also in consideration.  (Now it seems Joaquin Phoenix— a long shot to begin with– is out and that Bryan Cranston is once again the frontrunner… GRAIN OF SALT, PEOPLE!  Grain. Of. Salt.)

But like Cranston, Washington’s name is once more being bandied about in association for the big-budget super hero flick, but this time connected to a different character– one that hasn’t yet even been mentioned as a possibility for appearing in this movie.

Reportedly:

According to our source, the “Training Day” actor is being considered for the role of Green Lantern John Stewart instead. If this proves to be true, Green Lantern will join an ever growing list of members from DC’s Justice League of America that also include Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

There has previously been no mention of Green Lantern being included in this film, although the character was considered a lock for the eventual Justice League film.  There has been mention that The Flash would factor in in some capacity.  Originally, it was rumored that both The Flash and Wonder Woman would appear in their secret identities only, but with Gal Gadot’s casting being touted pretty much universally as in the role of Wonder Woman, the super hero not Diana Prince, that initial report appears to be weakening.  It was also rumored that Grant Gustin, Barry Allen/The Flash on TV’s ‘Arrow’ would get the role in the movie if he proved popular enough on the show, but I highly doubt that.

However, it’s possible that with Gustin’s overall favorable appearances on ‘Arrow’, the studio is swapping out GL for The Flash in ‘Batman Vs. Superman’ in order to let the TV character develop on his own without a movie counterpart.

Back to Washington as GL, Ben Affleck was hired to be an “older, battle weary” Batman.  But if Washington joins the ensemble, Green Lantern would be older and more battle weary than the Dark Knight.  On the other hand, the idea of utilizing John Stewart kind of makes sense because the live-action ‘Green Lantern’ movie isn’t that old and it’s wise for WB to distance themselves from Hal Jordan the version of the character in that box office turkey.  It also helps add diversity and the character is familiar to a wider audience after appearing on six seasons of ‘Justice League’/’Justice League Unlimited’.

As with all this “news” I would just take a wait and see attitude as it could be completely made up, false info the studio and film makers are releasing to throw fans off or, if true right now, could change tomorrow.

Honestly, even though a lot of this could prove false, the fact that WB hasn’t confirmed that this movie is for certain called ‘Batman Vs. Superman’, do you think they could stun us all and announce that the new film is actually the Justice League movie?!  To quote Paula Abdul, “Straight up now tell me!”

But anyway, would you like to see Denzel Washington portray John Stewart?  Or do you think a different actor would be better suited?  Or do you simply think Hal Jordan should be given a shot at redemption?  Or would you like to see Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner given a shot at the big screen?
