Back in June 2012, Universal announced it’s plans for a new movie in the ‘Child’s Play’ franchise. Titled Curse of Chucky, returning writer/director and series creator Don Mancini set a goal to make the demonic doll scary again after the corny ‘Bride of Chucky’ and ‘Seed of Chucky’ with this new installment. Production started a few months later and then it was revealed that Brad Dourif would be returning as well for this straight to DVD sequel to lend his voice to the character that he made famous.

Now, it appears that it’s time to get our first look at the new Chucky as we have the very first trailer for the film that sees the cuddly companion possessed by the spirit of killer Charles Lee Ray return to the screen. You can check it out below:

As I’ve said before in my previous coverage of this movie, the Chucky movies were the ones that really gave me nightmares as a kid. Chances are that they could do that again, but I’m just not that sold by the trailer. The tone depicted here doesn’t exactly scream horrifying. Then again, the art of making trailers has suffered a good bit in recent history, so one shouldn’t put too much stock in a trailer anymore, especially for a straight to DVD film that probably doesn’t have the budget for some epic trailers like the summer blockbusters inhabiting theaters right now.

What do you think of the first trailer for  Curse of Chucky? Do you think there’s potential for the doll to be frightening again? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

For more information on the film, here’s the synopsis:

Nica is grieving over the gruesome suicide of her mother when her domineering older sister Barb arrives with her young family in tow to help settle their mother’s affairs. As the sisters butt heads over Nica’s plans for the future, Barb’s young daughter comforts herself with a grinning, red-haired talking doll named Chucky that recently arrived mysteriously in the mail. But as a string of brutal murders begins to terrorize the household, Nica suspects the doll may hold the key to the bloodshed. What she doesn’t know is that Chucky has a personal score to settle. He’s determined to finish a job he started more than 20 years earlier, and this time he’s going to see it through to the bloody and shocking end.

Curse of Chucky starring Fiona Dourif, A Martinez, Danielle Bisutti, Brennan Elliott, and Brad Dourif will be available in stores on October 8, 2013 in time for Halloween.
