With Marvel having announced two untitled Marvel films for 2016 and 2017 one has to wonder what is going to be there. There has been a flurry of information on a Doctor Strange movie for some time now including which villains we would see in the movie. So while the film itself is just part of the rumor mill, it’s one that’s cranking out information nearly weekly at this point.
I’m sure we’ll get some solid confirmation as to whether there will or won’t be a Doctor Strange movie coming out at the San Diego Comic-Con this year. Kevin Feige had already said he would love to include the movie in Marvel’s Phase 3 but that isn’t an official announcement in itself. It seems we’ll have a little longer to wait for that confirmation.
In the meantime, this week’s rumor? A little bit about Doctor Strange’s past is being said will be in the movie.
For those who don’t know Doctor Strange, his past it is a bit of a messy one. In fact, pre-magic abilities he was the kind of person you’d want to spent no time with due to the fact that he was really just being a douche bag.
Prior to being the Sorcerer Supreme, he earned his title of Doctor by being one of the best neurosurgeons in the world. He was extremely brilliant, but his intelligence was overshadowed by his immense ego. He treated patients like numbers and anyone not paying for his services as even less. All that mattered was fame in his profession and the fortune that he was amassing. When a car accident ruined his hands, he went to all lengths to find a cure, wasting his large stockpile of wealth in the process.
Finally he comes across a man who he believed can use a form of magic to help him. In desperation, he begs for help and only through a selfless act does he gain the right to learn it and it changes his life forever.
Doctor Strange is a tough character. Magic doesn’t fit well into the Marvel Universe and his abilities have varied greatly from writer to writer. I’m extremely curious as to how they will write him into the current Marvel Universe and really hope they can finally find a way to adapt him into an ongoing character of interest whose ability to use magic makes sense and doesn’t start varying as the need for more or less magic arises. He’s had some crossovers with the Hulk, but generally only in crossover events, and with Planet Hulk off the table it might be hard to see where else Doctor Strange could fit in. Unless they find a way to stick him in with Thor down the line. Magic and Godliness might be an interesting mix.
Are you looking forward to seeing Strange on the big screen? Any ideas how he can best fit into the bigger picture when it comes to the Marvel Universe?
