Keanu Reeves as John Wick and Neo
Lionsgate – Warner Brothers

There’s going to be a Keanu Vs Keanu shootout on May 21, 2021, as Warner Brothers has scheduled ‘The Matrix 4’ to open on that date, which had already been staked out by Lionsgate as the release date for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’.  It’s a veritable Keanu Reeves-4-all!

WB had previously scheduled Taika Waititi’s live-action ‘Akira’ for that spot, but that has been put on pause, while Waititi works on Disney’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.

One of these Reeves flicks will move its release date, and it’s not going to be Warner Brothers’, so expect Lionsgate to shift ‘John Wick’ to a different date.

Original ‘Matrix’ co-creator Lana Wachowski co-wrote this fourth film, with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, and is set to direct and produce.  Reeves is returning as Neo, along with Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.  Reeves and Moss appeared in all three of the original ‘Matrix’ pictures, while Pinkett Smith appeared in the second and third.  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and ‘Sense8’s Toby Onwumere have also been cast.  None of their characters are known at this time, although there are rumors that Abdul-Mateen may be playing a younger version of Morpheus, the character played by Laurence Fishburn in the originals, Harris may be playing a villain, and Henwick will be a lead character, described as a female version of Neo.

‘The Matrix 4′ is rapidly adding cast members and production is to begin in early 2020.

From splashy CGI whirlwind to stripped-down shoot-’em-up, Reeves has been flourishing in the cult favorite ‘John Wick’ franchise of late.  The first movie was released in 2014, and was a modest hit, but thanks to its home video release and frequent airings on cable, the franchise’s popularity has ballooned.  This year’s ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ grossed $326.7 million at the global box office.

Take your pick!  Which Keanu pic will you choose?
