Word has arrived that Warner Brothers is developing a movie featuring the Amazons of Themyscira, who have previously appeared in ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League’. Connie Nielsen starred as Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta, and Robin Wright portrayed Hippolyta’s sister Antiope. Of course, the most notable Amazon is Wonder Woman herself, Princess Diana (Gal Gadot).
This news comes out of CCXP, which was attended by Gadot and director Patty Jenkins. Brazilian journalist MP Morales posted via Twitter:
Sim @PattyJenks confirmou que a WB desenvolve um filme focado nas Amazonas!
Ela não irá dirigir, mas trabalhará na produção executiva! Sem maiores detalhes. #MulherMaravilha1984 https://t.co/8Dv9be8llB

That translates to: “Yes, Patty Jenkins confirmed that WB is developing a movie focused on the Amazons! She will not direct, but will work on executive production! No further details.”
This wasn’t an official announcement, so consider this a RUMOR for now. But it should come as no surprise. Earlier this year, it was officially announced that Warner Brothers was working on a movie featuring ‘The Trench’, the toothy, cannibalistic monsters shown in ‘Aquaman’. ‘Aquaman’ director James Wan is attached to that project, but, like Jenkins, he will not actually direct the spin-off. ‘The Trench’ is reported to be a lower-budget horror movie. ‘The Amazons’ (or whatever it winds up being called) will most likely be an epic battle pic– something along the lines of ‘300’ or ‘Troy’.
While ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is mostly set in the “modern” world of 1984 (obviously), the trailer reveals that there will be some pretty major action sequences back in Themyscira, and at least some of that is told in flashbacks, to when Diana was a little girl. So we will be getting another dose of Amazon action in the sequel. Most likely, the audience’s reaction to that will determine whether or not Warner Brothers dives all the way in on this spin-off.
Would you like an entire movie focusing on the Amazons?
‘Wonder Woman 1984’ opens on June 5, 2020.
