Hulu

Hulu is going back to the drawing board, literally, with its planned animated series ‘The Tigra & Dazzler Show’, based on the Marvel Superheroes.  This series was announced as one of four adult-skewing cartoons based on Marvel properties for the streaming service, along with ‘Hit-Monkey’, ‘Howard the Duck’, and ‘M.O.D.O.K.’.  All four shows will crossover in the special ‘The Offenders’, a play on Netflix’s ‘The Defenders’ which united the stars of its four live-action Marvel shows.  Hulu has dismissed showrunner Erica Rivinoja and the entire ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ writing staff due to… can you guess?  Yep!… “creative differences.”

Rivinoja and the writers were 15 weeks into a planned 20-week production process.  Reportedly several scripts had been completed with outlines for more.  All of this will be thrown out.  Hulu is starting from scratch.  The service is seeking a new showrunner, who will assemble their own, completely new writing staff.  Though this sounds dire, Hulu (who has not issued a statement on this development) is committed to bringing this series to fruition.

This is the original description of ‘Tigra & Dazzler’:

‘Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show’ is a story about two woke superheroes and best friends, Tigra and Dazzler, as they fight for recognition among powered people who make up the eight million stories in Los Angeles. Writers Erica Rivinoja and Chelsea Handler serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb.

Comedian and talk show host Handler is still attached and will also voice one of the two main characters, although it wasn’t revealed which.

‘Tigra & Dazzler’ was set to be the third of these shows to be released, after ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ and ‘Hit-Monkey’, but it’s unclear if this hiccup will alter those plans.  Also, outside of ‘The Offenders’, these cartoons are not expected to cross over, so this should not impact any of the other shows which are also in development.

It is also not believed that this situation resulted from the recent shakeup behind the scenes at Marvel, with the promotion of Kevin Feige to Chief Creative Officer over all Marvel’s publishing, TV, and movies.  Marvel TV’s chief, Jeph Loeb, is expected to resign any day now.  These four cartoon series, as well as Hulu’s upcoming live-action ‘Helstrom’, and all existing Marvel shows were developed under his tenure.  ‘Helstrom’ will soon be the only live-action show developed under Loeb, as ABC’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has been canceled and its final season will arrive next year.  Also axed are Hulu’s ‘The Runaways’ and Freeform’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’.

Meanwhile, Feige’s ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, ‘WandaVision’, ‘Loki’, and ‘Hawkeye’ are due to roll out on Disney+ starting next year, to be followed by ‘Ms. Marvel’, ‘Moon Knight’, and ‘She-Hulk’.  Unlike the current shows, these will directly connect to the film universe.

Are you still looking forward to these animated series on Hulu?
