If anyone is lamenting the end of 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise, there is still one final entry– ‘New Mutants’. Directed by Josh Boone, this film wrapped filming in September of 2017, before Disney bought Fox, but it was put on the shelf and has never been completed, as reportedly, it requires reshoots. With Disney’s purchase of Fox, and with plans in place to reintroduce the ‘X-Men’ characters as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looked as though this little horror-themed spin-off would never see the light of day. After all… it’s not even finished!
But Disney recently of their planned releases for the next three years, including Fox pictures. While the majority of this list is generic– “Untitled Marvel Movie,” “Untitled Pixar Movie,” etc.– there were some changes and shuffling, and even a few removals. But what wasn’t removed from Disney’s schedule? ‘New Mutants’. Inexplicably, that picture is still scheduled to open on April 3, 2020. (But… it’s not even finished!)

There had previously been chatter that ‘New Mutants’ wouldn’t hit theaters, but would wind up on a Disney home outlet like Freeform or Hulu. Now there is also Disney+, but considering that this is a borderline horror movie, Hulu sounds like a better fit. But, no, it sounds like it is still headed to theaters.
But what about those necessary reshoots? Boone is currently filming the ambitious CBS All Access 10-part miniseries ‘The Stand’. Henry Zaga, who played Roberto da Costa/Sunspot in ‘New Mutants’, is also part of the cast of ‘The Stand’. He also co-stars on the Netflix series ‘Trinkets’ which has been picked up for a second (and final) season. Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball) plays Jonathan Byers on ‘Stranger Things’ and reportedly the fourth season of that series will begin filming in January and stretch until August, which pretty much negates any chance that he will be free to film reshoots for ‘New Mutants’ in time for an April release date. Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage) co-stars on Netflix’s ‘Another Life’, which has been renewed for a second season. Anya Taylor-Joy (Ilyana Rasputin/Magik) is attached to star in the Netflix miniseries ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. Masie Williams Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane– will star in the Sky miniseries ‘Two Weeks to Live’, and the film adaptation of ‘Spring Awakening’.
The cast also includes Alice Braga as Cecelia Reyes, but Braga co-stars in the HBO miniseries, ‘We Are Who We Are’ and in the film ‘The Suicide Squad’, both of which are now filming, and Happy Anderson, who is part of the cast of TNT’s ‘Snowpiercer’, which has not yet debuted, but has already been renewed for a second season.
Are you looking forward to seeing ‘New Mutants’ on the big screen in April?
