Warner Bros. let us know that a fourth ‘Matrix’ movie was coming, and now it has been revealed that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (‘Aquaman,’ ‘The Get Down’) has joined the cast in a leading role. We’ll next see Abdul-Mateen in HBO’s ‘Watchmen‘ as well as in the upcoming ‘Candyman’ film. The actor was selected by director Lana Wachowski to be part of the franchise revival though his exact role in the movie has been kept under wraps. What we do know is that Abdul-Mateen will be joining Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss who are both reprising their roles in the upcoming film.
We know that Reeves had previously called the script “very ambitious.” Keeping in mind that the studio was looking for an actor to play a younger version of Neo it is unclear if Abdul-Mateen will be a new character entirely or perhaps a younger version of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus.

With ‘The Matrix,’ ‘The Matrix Reloaded,’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ all being smash hits at the box office, it is a surprise that the studio has taken this long to get a fourth film into production. Even with the delay to due producing rights that Warner Bros. had to workaround. Of course, the studio also had to be sure that they had a highly polished script for fans to be engaged by. While the first movie in the trilogy is still well-received by audiences, there was a notable decline in the story quality for both sequels, according to critics and fans.
Are you excited to see Yahya Abdul-Mateen II join the cast of the fourth ‘Matrix’ movie? Do you think that he’ll be playing a new character or revisiting someone who we’ve already met? Will a revisit to the ‘Matrix’ franchise once more give us a smash hit, or will the decline in quality from the last two films have you less interested in checking this one out?
