Moon Knight
Marvel Comics

While the first wave of original Marvel Studios TV series coming to Disney+ will star actors and characters from the film universe, the second wave, announced in August at the D23 Expo, will introduce new fan-favorite characters in their own shows which may eventually lead to film appearances.  These second wave programs are ‘She-Hulk’‘Ms. Marvel’, and ‘Moon Knight’.

With production inching closer, it is being reported that Marvel Studios wants a very specific type to play Marc Spectre/Moon Knight (via The GWW): “a Jewish ‘Zac Efron-type’ who is preferably of Israeli descent.”

Efron was pursued by Disney to portray Ikaris in ‘Eternals’, but the role wound up going to Richard Madden, so clearly he is on Marvel’s radar.  Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has admitted that there are certain actors that the studio is dying to work with, and have had open discussions with, but that it is just a matter of finding the right part for them.  He has stated that they continuously speak to Keanu Reeves but haven’t figured out how to use him yet.  They had been in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal for years, before plugging him into the role of Quentin Beck/Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’.

Is ‘Moon Knight’ the right project for Efron?  It could be.  Efron actually is part Jewish.  (The name “Efron” is Jewish in origin.)  Other talented and handsome Jews or partial Jews include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Daniel Radcliffe, Timothée Chalamet, and Ansel Elgort, as well as Ezra Miller, but the fact that he is attached to star in Warner Brothers’ ‘The Flash’ makes him a highly unlikely choice to take on a Marvel project.  There’s also Andrew Garfield, but he’s an unlikely choice, due to his past as Spider-Man in the unpopular ‘Amazing’ duo.

Marc Spectre is an adventurer with Dissociative Identity Disorder. While Spectre is an ex-soldier and mercenary, he also maintains the identities of millionaire Steven Grant, cab driver Jake Lockley, and more recently, Mr. Knight, a masked police consultant.  He died in the desert and was resurrected by the Egyptian deity Khonshu… or was he?

It isn’t clear when ‘Moon Knight’ will arrive on Disney+, but it won’t be until 2022 or later.

Are you a fan of the character?  What actor would you like to see play him?
