The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

Disney’s annual D23 Expo was a couple of weeks ago, but there was so much news coming out of the event that a few smaller details were unreported.  That goes for the poster for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’.  Sebastian Stan‘s Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes is in the foreground, wearing a new black (navy?) leather jacket.  Of course, it has one sleeve, so his cybernetic left arm can be exposed.  Beyond that, he got a haircut.  His floppy old mop was a little emo, so it suited him at the time.  Hopefully this new ‘do indicates that he will spend less time brooding.

Perhaps a bigger deal is Anthony Mackie‘s costume which appears to be red, white and blue, indicating his elevation to the role of Captain America to replace the now-retired Steve Rogers, following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

It’s hard to see, so it’s possible that Falcon’s new costume is red, white and black, not blue.  But if that is the case, the prominence of the red and white at least makes his costume look a little more like the classic Falcon costume from the comics, versus the lowkey dark military-inspired garb he has been shown wearing in the movies up until now.

The more we learn about ‘The Falcon & The Winter Soldier’, the less it seems to be a given that Sam Wilson will slide into the role of Captain America, at least not easily.  Wyatt Russell has been cast as John Walker, who temporarily took Rogers’ place in the 1980s as Captain America.  The government chose him over Wilson, because they didn’t think the public was ready for a black Captain America at that time.  (Walker later became the US Agent, and had a lengthy career in that role.)

‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ will be released on Disney+ in the fall of 2020.
