Don't Expect Jon Favreau To Direct Another Marvel Studios Film

Jon Favreau helped create the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he directed the 2008 hit ‘Iron Man’ but don’t expect the director to be returning anytime soon. When he is done being busy with Disney+‘s ‘The Mandalorian’ you shouldn’t get your hopes up that he’ll be behind the camera for another Marvel superhero. After directing both ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ he hasn’t directed another Marvel Studios film, though has served as both an executive producer and a returning actor as Happy Hogan.

So why wouldn’t he direct again? According to Favreau:

“Developing a character over 23 films, supported by Robert Downey’s performance, Gwyneth Paltrow’s relationship to him and performance, from the first moment you see them onscreen to the last moment you see them together, you develop such an emotional connection to that character. Going from selfishness to selflessness — the perfect model myth — and that paying off over how many hours of film? I feel like I’ve seen that video game solved perfectly. So to jump back into the big screen right now, by being involved with both of those projects, I went through that journey.”

It seems that he just doesn’t want the kind of time commitment involved in helping fully guide a character across their story arc moving forward. Which makes sense as Favreau has been working with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man for over ten years now which is a good chunk of anyone’s life.

That isn’t to say Favreau is fully done with the MCU. He was also asked if he’d be open to returning as Happy Hogan at all which he was quick to responded “Oh sure, I love doing that.”

Sadly, if Disney and Sony can’t figure out how to work together again it feels unlikely that Hogan would be making another appearance down the line with his increased attachment to Spider-Man.

Are you sad that Jon Favreau won’t be directing another film for Marvel Studios? Which character would you love to see him tackle if he were to change his mind? Do you think that he’ll once again appear in a Spider-Man film? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
