star trek picard first look

Quite a few years will have passed between the events of 2002’s ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ and next year’s ‘Star Trek: Picard’ but soon we’ll know more about what happened to Jean-Luc in that time period. Two prequel projects, a comic miniseries and novel, are kicking off to fill us in as to what the ex-Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise has been up to since we last saw him. Both of these are being created thanks to a partnership which CBS Consumer Products has with both IDW Publishing and Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books.

The comic prequel is titled ‘Star Trek: Picard – Countdown’ and is set closer to the time period of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation‘. It is being written by Mike Johnson in conjunction with supervising producer Kirsten Beyer. The book is said to “center around a single mission that would change the life of Picard.” Likely, this is the moment which will see Picard leaving Starfleet. We’ll be able to pick up this miniseries starting in November, and it will end in January of 2020.

Right after the comic ends, we’ll flash forward to modern times in the novel ‘The Last Best Hope.’ Gallery Books will release it in February of 2020 by long-time “Star Trek” writer Una McCormack. This book is set to “introduce new characters appearing in the show” and will directly lead “into the Picard television series.”

According to CBS Consumer products executive VP global franchise management Veronica Hart:

“From the moment we announced this series we’ve seen a groundswell of support from our fan base who are thrilled to have Jean-Luc Picard back on their screens. Having this brand new original backstory play out through both comic book and novel formats will set the stage for the new series in an exciting way while also showcasing the work of our talented partners at Simon & Schuster and IDW”

Anyone who has been dying to learn why Picard ended up on his own and what will put him on a new path to adventure will want to grab both these titles.
