Jeffrey Dean Morgan's John Winchester
The CW

After 15 years, you’d expect everything but the kitchen sink in the last season of ‘Supernatural’, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath waiting to see a return by John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who seems to have made his final farewell in Season 14’s episode “Lebanon,” in which John is pulled from 2003 and reunited with his sons, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) and his resurrected wife Mary (Samantha Smith).  But after it is discovered that his time displacement is wreaking havoc on the time stream, John must say goodbye and return to the past.

At the TCA press tour, executive producer Eugenie Ross-Leming said:

“He had a fairly wonderful exit from the universe in his last appearance.  I mean, I think it would be really hard to top that episode in terms of the family continuity and emotions. And I think he sort of made his mark the last season, myself.”

In January, Morgan expressed hope that he could return one last time, stating:

“Hopefully they’ll leave it in a place where John could come back again.  My dream would be to come back and do something in the last year, the last episode, the last couple episodes, whatever, and do a proper little arc… Maybe [episode 300] won’t be the end of John.  Like I always say to everybody: ‘It’s ‘Supernatural’, anything can happen.’”

Keep in mind that Season 15, like 14, will be shorter than those in the past, with only 20 episodes, so they can’t fit everything in.  It’s probably best to leave the goodbye in “Lebanon” alone and use that time to wrap up other loose ends.

But you never know.  They might find a reason to bring John back, at least in a small cameo for one last time.

The final hunt kicks off on Thursday, October 10 at 8 pm EST on The CW.
