Even though there are still a few more episodes of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3 yet to be released (the finale is set for release on Wednesday, Aug. 14), Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, Craig Erwich has announced that Hulu’s most-watched series will be back for a fourth installment. This news was delivered at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The current season has been met with mixed reviews, with complaints that it is stuck in a rut, so hopefully, this will give it a chance to redeem itself.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel of the same name, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is set in the future of what was once the United States of America, where a totalitarian regime has taken power. Due to diminished birth rates, fertile women are forced to serve as Handmaids to allow the wealthy ruling class to continue to procreate.
The show has received acclaim since its first season, picking up 11 Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes. It is nominated for a whopping 11 more Emmys at this year’s ceremony. ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ was the first streaming drama to win the Best Drama Emmy.

Among those awards are Lead Actress accolades for star Elisabeth Moss who portrays June Osborne, formerly Offred. The series also stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, and Bradley Whitford.
Margaret Atwood has announced that she is penning a sequel to her original ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ novel called ‘The Testaments’, so there is some speculation that Hulu wants to keep the show going until then, so that it can draw on that book as inspiration for future episodes.
Before the launch of Season 3, Moss said:
“You need to be right there with her and experiencing what she’s experiencing. Every second is so, so important. You can’t skip anything. It’s so important to know what her next move is. So I thought it was really smart, and it was also obviously just a very cool, entertaining kind of way to pick up the season.”
Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized “return to traditional values.” As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.
