Slowly, details about the upcoming 12th season of ‘Doctor Who’ are starting to emerge. The latest buzz is that a group of classic villains, the Cybermen, will make a return, and it is said that their episode will feature a “plot that is the stuff of classic horror.” In fact, this new season is said to be much darker than the 11th. In the episode featuring the Cybermen, those automatons will serve as Mary Shelley’s inspiration for her classic novel ‘Frankenstein’.
A source reports:
“This new run is much scarier than Jodie’s first year and will definitely put the frighteners on fans. Things are about to get darker for the Doctor.”
The Cybermen last appeared in the 2017 episode “The Doctor Falls,” in which they shoot the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi). That episode ended on a cliffhanger which was resolved in that year’s Christmas special, “Twice Upon A Time” in which Capaldi’s 12th Doctor regenerated into Jodie Whitaker’s 13th.

Along with the Daleks, the Cybermen are among the Doctor’s most persistent foes. They made their debut in the 1966 episode “The Tenth Planet” which featured William Hartnell’s First Doctor. Dr. Kit Pedler, the unofficial scientific advisor to the show, and story editor Gerry Davis are credited with their creation.
Chris Chibnall, the showrunner of ‘Doctor Who’ who took over last season, did not utilize any of the classic villains in that season, perhaps to give the season its own flavor. (A Dalek did appear in the Christmas New Years Special.) But he has teased that more familiar faces will turn up this season.
Season 12 will not launch until next year, but there has been a rumor that a Christmas Special or some other stand-alone special will appear before that.
