Are you missing ‘Doctor Who’? Fans were disappointed that it was announced that there would be no more episodes this year, and that the series would return for its 12th season in 2020. But there might be a glimmer of hope that BBC will deliver a special episode toward the end of this year. Since 2005, the long-running series has gifted fans with a special episode aired on Christmas Day, except for this past year when a New Years Day Special was aired instead. But considering that the 11th season broke from tradition in numerous other ways– most famously by introducing the first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker— that seemed fitting.

RadioTimes.com reports that a stand-alone episode is in the works, although when it would air is unknown. If it airs on a holiday, that continues the tradition, but the website also speculates that BBC could air the special in a “less competitive” to help properly relaunch the adventures of the Doctor and her companions.
It should be noted that while many of the ‘Doctor Who Christmas Specials’ live up to the distinction by incorporating holiday themes– robot Santas, killer snowmen– others have eschewed the Christmas wrapping and simply delivered more traditional stand-alone ‘Doctor Who’ stories, although they tend to be a little grander than the average episode.
BBC hasn’t announced a return date for the series beyond “early 2020.” As usual, details are being kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that one episode will see the return of the evil Judoon, while another is reportedly set in wartime Paris.
Regarding the return of the Judoon, Chris Chibnal, the series showrunner explaimed:
“No! Sho! Blo! The Judoon are storming back into Doctor Who in full force, and the streets of Gloucester aren’t safe. If anyone has anything to hide, confess now. The Judoon are taking no prisoners, and will stop at nothing to fulfil their mission! The whole team on Doctor Who are delighted and scared in equal measure to welcome them back: One of many treats we’ve got in store for viewers next series. And we’re over the moon (with Judoon), to be welcoming the wondrous Neil Stuke as guest star. We can’t wait to show you what happens when his path crosses with the Thirteenth Doctor.”
