Back To The Future: The Musical

The Tony Awards were held this past Sunday with ‘Hadestown’ winning for Best Musical, topping ‘Ain’t Too Proud’, ‘Beetlejuice’, ‘The Prom’, and ‘Tootsie’.  Could ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ be in the running for next year’s awards?  Or maybe 2021’s?  Judge for yourself.

‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ is obviously based on the classic 1985 movie, and features music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, and a book by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale.  The musical will feature songs from the movie, like Huey Lewis & the News’ pop single “The Power of Love” and classic rock ditty “Johnny B. Goode.”  But the film wasn’t a musical, so obviously, new songs have been written to help tell the story “on stage in a brand new way,” as Gale said.

Now, a sample has been released.  The new song is called “Put Your Mind To It” and is sung by Olly Dobson, who will embody lead character Marty McFly onstage, and is meant to be sung to George, his future father.

‘Back to the Future’ is something of a double time-twister at this point.  The original movie was made in the 1980s but saw Marty traveling back to the ’50s.  It’s now the 20-teens.  So while “Put Your Mind To It” doesn’t throw all the way back to the ’50s, it does channel the ’80s, complete with a rockin’ horn section.  It sounds like it could have been a lost song by Huey Lewis & the News.

This is the first original song to be released from ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’, but a video of Dobson singing ‘The Power of Love’ was released in May.  If you missed it, you can hear it below:

‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ will open at the Manchester Opera House on February 20, 2020, and will run for 12 weeks, before transferring to London’s West End.  Provided it goes well, presumably it will then be brought to the US.  Tickets to the Manchester shows are already on sale.

What do you think of Olly Dobson as Marty McFly?  Is “Put Your Mind to It” worthy of standing next to “The Power of Love?”
