Emmy-winning ‘Adventure Time’ director and writer Elizabeth Ito is bringing her “hybrid documentary and animated series,” ‘City of Ghosts’ to Netflix.  This will be Ito’s first time acting as showrunner.

‘City of Ghosts’ follows “a group of kids who discover stories around their city by communicating with the ghosts that inhabit it.”  Much of the story is drawn from Ito’s own upbringing, be a yonsei (a 4th generation Japanese American) living in “various multicultural neighborhood across Los Angeles.”  ‘City of Ghosts’ “takes an entertaining look at how generations of diverse inhabitants can affect the changing dynamics of neighborhoods and the communities that form in them.”

Based just on this bit of artwork, it appears the ‘Adventure Time’ influence is evident, as the “ghost” looks a lot like Lumpy Space Princess.  In addition to ‘Adventure Time’, Ito also created the Cartoon Network short ‘Welcome to My Life’.

‘City of Ghosts’ will be produced in-house at the Netflix Animation building in Hollywood.  There are currently about a dozen projects in the works there including: ‘Kid Cosmic’ from Craig McCracken (‘Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends’, ‘The Powerpuff Girls’), ‘Maya and the Three’ from Jorge R. Gutierrez (‘Book of Life’, ‘El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera’), ‘Jacob and the Sea Beast’ from Chris Williams (‘Frozen’, ‘Moana’, ‘Big Hero Six’), ‘Trash Truck’ from Max Keane, the adult-skewing series ‘Inside Job’ from Shion Takeuchi (‘Regular Show’, ‘Inside Out’), and a new interactive series ‘Battle Kitty’, from Matt Layzell (‘Apple & Onion’, ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’).

Ito won an Emmy Award for the 2010 ‘Adventure Time’ episode “Islands Part 4: Imaginary Resources.”  She previously worked on ‘Phineas and Ferb’, ‘Bee Movie ‘, ‘Astro Boy’, ‘Hotel Transylvania’, ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’, ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’, and ‘Summer Camp Island’.

It sounds as though this project is just getting started.  Check back for updates as they arrive.
