TBS has renewed ‘Miracle Workers’ for a second season, but the show is now described as an anthology, so while the cast– Steve Buscemi, Daniel Radcliffe, Karan Soni, and Geraldine Viswanathan– will return, it will be as new characters in a different story. And as part of this new season, ‘Miracle Workers’ is getting medieval.
Based on Simon Rich’s novel of the same name, the first season reinterpreted Heaven as a corporation in danger of shutting down because its CEO, God, played by Buscemi, has grown bored with the Earth and wants to wipe it out and move on to new endeavors. Low-level angel Craig (Radcliffe) must convince God not to destroy the Earth and in order to do so, much trick two mortals into falling in love.
The second season, set in medieval times, is said to involve “friendship, family and trying not to be murdered. It revolves around a group of villagers in the dark ages trying to stay positive in an age of inequality and fake news.”
As Rich announced:
“I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity to bring my novel What in God’s Name to life in Season 1. And now that I’ve bled that sucker dry, I’m really excited to tell a brand-new story with the same group of brilliant actors.”
Thom Hinkle, EVP Original Programming at TBS added:
“Simon’s absurdist and comedic tales of human existence are truly unique. He pitched us what he wants to explore in the dark ages with these brilliant actors, and it’s weird and smart and perfect.”
From the start, ‘Miracle Workers’ was conceived as a miniseries, with a definite ending. But it appears that everyone involved was pleased with the result, and decided to take another stab at it, with a new story in a different scenario. The first season kicked off in February and consisted of seven episodes.
