Filming of a new comic book adaptation, ‘The Owners’ has begun outside of London, in an isolated Victorian mansion in Kent. Based on a Belgian comic book by award-winning artist Hermann (last name Huppen), and written by his son Yves H. ‘The Owners’ is being directed by Julius Berg (‘La forêt’), with a screenplay by Berg and Mathieu Gompel (‘The Dream Kids’). The film’s producers, XYZ Films, are currently shopping the picture around at the Cannes Film Festival.

Heading up the cast is ‘Game of Thrones’ alum Maisie Williams. Joining her are Sylvester McCoy, Rita Tushingham, Ian Kenny, Jake Curran, Andrew Ellis, and Stacha Hicks.
The story takes place in rural England during the early 1990s. Childhood friends Nathan (Kenney) and Terry (Ellis), broke and on the scrap heap at 20, are spurred on by an out-of-town sociopath named Gaz (Curran) to rob a house. Nathan’s girlfriend Mary (Williams) is dead against the plan. When the homeowners return a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, leaving Mary fighting to save herself from a nightmare scenario.
It sounds a little bit like the American horror movie ‘Don’t Breathe’, but presumably that’s just superficial.
Williams can currently be seen in the final season of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’. She also filmed the ‘X-Men’-related horror film ‘New Mutants’, but now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox, it remains to be seen if that picture will be released.

This appears to be an almost entirely-British production, so the rest of the cast may or may not be familiar to Americans. McCoy may be best known as the seventh incarnation of ‘Doctor Who’ or for playing Radagast in ‘The Hobbit’ movies. Tushingham won an Emmy Award for her first film, 1961’s ‘A Taste of Honey’. Most of her work has been based out of her native England. Most recently, she has appeared on the TV shows ‘Still Open All Hours’, and ‘Vera’. Last year, Kenny had a role in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, while Curran appeared in ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’. Ellis can be seen in the current arthouse flick ‘Teen Spirit’, starring Elle Fanning. Hicks appeared on the Netflix special ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’.
Hermann’s work tends to be fairly dark and disillusioned. His work was previously adapted into the 2005 movie ‘The Wedding Party’, and the post-apocalyptic TV series ‘Jeremiah’, which starred Luke Perry, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and Sean Astin, which lasted for two seasons on Showtime from 2002-04.
