While many details about CBS’s upcoming “Star TrekPicard series are still under wraps, director Jonathan Frakes is opening up on the “ambitious approach” the series is taking. He shared that each director is taking two episodes and this isn’t from having five-mini arcs in the series but that “it is a ten-episode movie… I think it has to do with amortization. It is a very ambitious approach to television, in the first season.” I believe all of my fellow Trekkies out there will be thrilled to learn that we’re getting something closer to a “movie” that puts Jean-Luc Picard front and center!

As to how the series will be shot, Frakes explains the series will consist of ten episodes divided into blocks of 2 episodes each with Hanelle Culpepper directing the first block (Episodes 1 & 2) and Frakes the second (Episodes 3 & 4). No mention of who will be directing the other 3 blocks was given.

As to how fans of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ will feel about the show, Frakes stated:

“Eighteen years later. I think the fans are going to be thrilled and excited and surprised. I have had the privilege of reading the first couple of episodes, and I have spent some time with Patrick who is so engaged [laughs] Sorry. It’s wonderful. It’s smart. I’m excited about it. He is obviously more excited. His announcing of it at Las Vegas—which I believe was his idea—was very smart. You know he is 78, and he is going to be carrying the show on his shoulders, his considerable shoulders.”

Not only is Frakes “excited” for Patrick Stewart and feels “so blessed to back” but he also thinks that “it’s so ironic that I spent so many years trying to expand where I was working and I was lucky enough to get onto other types of shows” because “now I am deeply ensconced in the world I was in 31 years ago.”

With the great work Frakes has done behind the camera on ‘The Orville’ and ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ we are too! Now, if only we can see William Riker make some kind of an appearance in this new “Star Trek” series.

Are you looking forward to ‘Picard’ being released? Do you think there is any chance we’ll see Riker showing up at all? What do you think of this new series being called a 10-episode movie? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
