Brightburn

What if Superman had turned out evil?  That’s the basis for the new super horror movie, ‘Brightburn’ from director David Yarovesky, producer James Gunn, with a script by Brian Gunn (James’ brother) and Mark Gunn (their cousin).  Like Kal-El, Brandon Breyer was rocketed to Earth from outer space and was adopted by a kindly farm couple, who see him as a gift from God.  But Brandon’s path diverges from Clark Kent’s once he goes to school where he is bullied for being a “creep.”

At first, he seems content to simply get revenge on his tormentors but soon he is terrorizing a waitress in a cafe and knocking an airplane out of the sky, leaving no survivors.  Unfortunately for humanity, like Superman, it doesn’t seem that anything can stop him.

Jackson A. Dunn portrays Brandon, with Elizabeth Banks and David Denman as his adopted parents.

James Gunn has been off social media since he was fired by Disney last year, but now he’s back on Twitter which he is using to promote ‘Brightburn’.  Below, he shared the film’s new extended trailer:

In addition to the trailer, Gunn also unveiled the very comic book-inspired poster:

Gunn’s return to social media follows his reinstatement by Disney, who rehired him to direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3’.  In the meantime, Warner Brothers enlisted him to helm ‘The Suicide Squad’ a reboot of the DC super villain franchise.  ‘The Suicide Squad’ is due in theaters on August 6, 2021.  ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3’ doesn’t have an exact release date but is expected in 2022.

But before that, you can check out ‘Brightburn’ in about two months.  As Gunn wrote:

“Our hearts and hands are busted making this movie for you guys.  Join us in watching it on Friday, May 24, in theaters everywhere.”
