A movie based on Neil Gaiman‘s ‘Sandman‘ was stuck in development limbo for ages and recently the creator has asked if it could still happen. The question came up at an Amazon Studios ‘Good Omens‘ event at SXSW. Fans of his work have often wondered if ‘The Sandman’ will ever make it to the big screen and show us a live-action Endless, but Gaiman himself doesn’t have much say in the matter. Due to rights, he isn’t the one who would be bringing the film to life, but he is hopeful that it will happen:

“The Endless are owned by DC Comics/Time Warner and not by me. [Good Omens] getting made, Terry [Pratchett] and I owned it so we could control where it went. I think as the days go on, as the years go on, the probability that a Sandman thing will happen, obviously, increase continually. But I have no say in anything.”

A film has been attempted with first Warner Bros. trying to crack it in the 90s and most notably David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt working to create a feature film in 2013. Unfortunately, that ended in 2016 and while current sci-fi superstar Eric Heisserer turned in a new script in 2016, he dropped out of the project immediately after. While a movie has always been a fun thought, the rise of quality in television due to the likes of HBO and streaming services really have many fans wondering if that would be the right format to tell this story.

The original comics that introduced the character came out in 1989 and introduced us to the world of Morpheus, aka Dream of the Endless. He is a significant force in the universe who has been imprisoned for decades and when he reemerges needs to rebuild his plane of existence and reevaluate his place in the universe.

You can hear Neil talk about it in the clip below!

Would you be excited to see a ‘Sandman’ movie still see the light of day? Is this a story that would be best suited for an ongoing series? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
