Spotify Hulu

As the streaming race is getting more crowded, Hulu and Spotify are combining forces to save subscribers money.  The ad-supported version of Hulu will now be FREE to Spotify Premium customers.  This is a limited time offer, valid through June 10 (or while supplies last… WHAT supplies?!).  The offer is also for new Spotify Premium customers.  The new plan is $9.99 a month, down from the previous price of $12.99 a month, when the service kicked off last year.  This offer also includes the first month FREE!  Customers will then be billed $9.99 plus tax each month going forward.  And for those that signed up under the $12.99 plan, those prices will automatically be dropped to $9.99.

In a blog post, Spotify wrote:

“When you experience a song that is perfectly timed to the tear-jerking final moment of the show you most recently binged (say, This is Us on Hulu), you’re not likely to let that feeling just go away.”

Without the package, the ad-supported version of Hulu is now $5.99 a month, down from the previous price of $7.99.

The Handmaid’s Tale

With this partnership between Hulu and Spotify, fans can truly “enjoy that audio-visual connection” by switching from one service to the other.  Spotify cited one of Hulu’s signature series, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ as a perfect example.  Kate Bush’s ‘This Woman’ was featured in the Season 2 premiere, and streams of that song surged 433% afterward.  Though not quite as dramatically, Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Hungry Heart’ spiked 86%, and Dusty Springfield’s ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ jumped up 127%.

Last month, Hulu announced the creation of four new Marvel animated series for adults– ‘Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.’, ‘Marvel’s Hit-Monkey’, ‘Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show’, ‘Marvel’s Howard the Duck’–  and a crossover special ‘Marvel’s The Offenders’.  With Disney becoming the 60% controlling shareholder of Hulu next week, look for more Marvel, Disney, and possibly ‘Star Wars’ projects to make Hulu home.

Castle Rock

In addition to the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, Hulu also hosts a variety of original sci-fi and fantasy TV shows and movies.  Original series include the Stephen King mashup ‘Castle Rock’, time travel comedy ‘Future Man’, and ‘Marvel’s Runaways’.  Subscribers can also binge on outside shows from the past and present, like ‘The Orville’, ‘The Last Man on Earth’, ‘Legion’, ‘The Gifted’, ‘Futurama’, ‘Rick and Morty’, ‘Steven Universe’, ‘Smallville’, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’, ‘The X-Files’, ‘Stargate SG-1’, ‘Gotham’, and more.

Marvel’s Runaways

Its movie selection is a little lacking, but if you’ve never seen certain classics, like ‘Space Jam’, ‘Total Recall’, ‘The Neverending Story’, ‘Akira’, ‘Children of the Corn’, or ‘Pet Sematary’, they’re available, as are more recent entries like ‘Sorry to Bother You’, ‘Arrival’, ‘Colossal’, and ‘Let the Right One In’.  For comic fans, there is the great documentary ‘Batman & Bill’ about the life of Batman’s unsung co-creator Bill Finger.  For horror fans, two original flicks have been recently added, ‘Treehouse’ and ‘Down’.

If you’ve been on the fence about getting either Spotify or Hulu, now looks like the perfect time to jump on board.
