legion-season-3

The mind-tripping adventures of David Haller is coming to an end. At this year’s Winter TCAs, FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed that the upcoming season of ‘Legion’ will be the final one for the mutant.

It’s long been known that ‘Legion’ creator Noah Hawley had only planned the series to run for 3 seasons and according to Landgraf, Hawley is sticking to that plan. Even though FX could not sway him to continue beyond this last season, fans will be happy to hear that the series will end the way Hawley always envisioned it to end.

‘Legion’ was extraordinary as it focused on bending reality to explore the psychological effects of mental illness rather than the usual focus on superpowers. According to Hawley:

“I think endings are what give stories meaning. I said last year, I’ve never done a second season of anything, so I always thought about this as a complete story with a beginning and with an end. And it felt like three acts of a story, and so this just felt like a natural place to end it.

I feel like on some level, what the show is following is this sort of cycle of mental illness where we met David, who had been at his lowest point and tried to kill himself, and now he’s in the psychiatric hospital, and he meets Syd and everything. He gets balanced out, he’s on his meds, he gets out, everything’s going great for a while, he thinks, ‘Maybe I don’t need these meds anymore.’ He goes off the meds and spirals down, which is sort of where we have found him now, and the question is can he get back to some kind of good place or is he gone for good? Once we tell that story, it feels like we’re just going back to the beginning of the cycle, potentially. It just felt like the right place to end it.”

In the comics, David Haller was the son of Prof. X and it was hoped that Patrick Stewart would make some kind of cameo appearance back in Season 2. Now that he is immersed in his own ‘Picard’ series, the likelihood of an appearance in the final season is definitely slim to none (more emphasis on none).

While no exact date for the final season was given, fans of ‘Legion’ can expect a return sometime in June.

‘Legion’ stars Dan Stevens as David Haller, Aubrey Plaza as Lenny Busker, Rachel Keller as Syd Barrett, Bill Irwin as Cary Loudermilk, Jeremie Harris as Ptonomy Wallace and Jean Smart as Melanie Bird.
