Sag Awards

In one way, the Screen Actors Guild Awards may be a better predictor of the Academy Awards, because like the Oscars, the SAG Awards are voted for by other actors.  In that case, it looks as though Glenn Close is now a lock for Best Actress at the Oscars, as she took home the prize from the SAGs.  (She tied with Lady Gaga at the Golden Globes.)

Unfortunately, the SAGs won’t predict wins for ‘Black Panther’, even though that Marvel picture won two SAGs.  Those wins were for Outstanding Performance by a Cast and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble– two prizes that the Academy doesn’t give out.  Even so, this is still a great honor for the film.  As has been widely reported, superhero movies are almost never recognized in the major categories, so ‘Black Panther’ being nominated is huge, but winning two SAG Awards is major.

In the Best Performance by a Cast category, Chadwick Boseman and company bested the performers in ‘A Star is Born’, ‘BlacKkKlansman’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.  To be honest, outside of ‘Black Panther’, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is really the only other picture nominated that truly features an ensemble, so this award almost had to go to one or the other.

In the Stunt category, ‘Black Panther’ bested fellow Marvel flicks ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ as well as Netflix’s ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ and ‘Mission: Impossible — Fallout’.

Elsewhere, Emily Blunt won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for ‘A Quiet Place’.  Despite being a big hit with both viewers and critics, ‘A Quiet Place’ came out last spring, so many voters have thrown their support to newer movies that are fresher on their minds.

In the television arena, there were no genre wins, not even for stunts, where ‘GLOW’ bested more traditional entries ‘Daredevil’, ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’, ‘The Walking Dead’, and ‘Westworld’.
