Netflix’s ‘Bird Box‘ gives us a film where the monstrous creatures that are terrorizing the world are never seen. However, a new deleted scene shows us not only what they look like but informs us that they were almost on display in the film itself. With the monsters being described as “green man with a horrific baby face” I can’t say that we ended up missing out on anything here. The movie has been divisive with viewers either loving or hating the film but showing this creature likely would have had more not enjoying it.
The news came from screenwriter Eric Heisserer who ended up sharing how the deleted scene came about:
“There was a time when one of the producers was like, ‘No, you have to see something at some point’ and forced me to write essentially a nightmare sequence where Malorie experiences one in that house.”
As to the nature and look of the character, it was briefly described by Sandra Bullock who plays the leading role of Malorie:
“It was a green man with a horrific baby face. It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn, and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”
Thankfully, director Susanne Bier agreed and due to what ended up being shot, the entire idea was scrubbed from the final cut:
“It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like this is not going to be tense. It’s just going to be funny. At first, Sandy was like, ‘I don’t want to see it’ because she thought it was scary. Then it was like, ‘Don’t show it to me because [I’ll laugh].’ Every time I did it, I was like, ‘Shit, that’s a different film.’”
Heisserer let the director know that he was “so sorry you had to shoot that” because the time wasted there could likely have been used much better in another area the movie’s production.
While children can be terrifying, this does not sound like something that would have had audiences chilled to the bone as to what ended up terrorizing the world. The mysterious nature of not knowing what they were up against worked better than what is being described here.
Do you wish that Netflix and the production team had kept these green men with a horrific baby face in ‘Bird Box’ or would it have ruined the film? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
