Sony Reportedly Wants Dylan O'Brien To Headline Harbinger

Filming has wrapped on Dave Wilson’s ‘Bloodshot’, starring Vin Diesel, Sony’s first film based on the output of Valiant Entertainment.  Now it looks as though the studio is moving forward with a second film, ‘Harbinger’ with Justin Tipping, who previously helmed the youth-focused indie ‘Kicks’, as well as an episode of ‘The Chi’, and the pilot for the upcoming TBS series ‘Twenties’, created and written by Emmy-winner Lena Waithe.  And Tipping already has his eye on a star for ‘Harbinger’– Dylan O’Brien.

It is not confirmed whether he has signed on or not, but it is reported that O’Brien is Sony’s #1 pick.  O’Brien first gained notice for playing sidekick Stiles Stilinski on MTV’s ‘Teen Wolf’ for six seasons, before headlining the ‘Maze Runner’ film series.  He has also appeared in the films ‘The Internship’, ‘Deepwater Horizon’, and ‘American Assassin’.  He provided the voice for ‘Bumblebee’ in the upcoming film of the same name.

O’Brien would be playing Peter Stancheck, a young Harbinger– or person with superpowers– with mental abilities.  He becomes the leader of a group of young renegades who attempt to thwart the machinations of Toyo Harada, the first “Omega-Harbinger” able to control his abilities at will and awaken the powers of others.  Peter also appears to be an “Omega Harbinger” which makes him a target for Harada.

O’Brien has a few projects in the pipeline, including Jordan Peele’s sci-fi anthology ‘Weird City’, and the feature films ‘The Bayou’ and ‘Marceau’.  So it may take some juggling to fit ‘Harbinger’ into his schedule.

Though Sony has not made offers, it is reported that they want Noah Centineo (‘The Fosters’, ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’) for the role of Peter’s best friend Joe Irons, and Beanie Feldstein (‘Lady Bird’, ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising’) for Faith Herbert also known as Zephyr, perhaps the most popular character from the ‘Harbinger’ book, who has the telekinetic ability to fly.

What do you think of this possible cast so far?

The first Sony/Valiant project, ‘Bloodshot’ is in post-production and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 21, 2020.
