‘A Quiet Place’ was one of the biggest box office surprises of the year, raking in an amazing $188 million on a micro-budget of $17 million. Almost immediately, talk of a sequel began to swirl, but what can fans expect? It appears that the script, which will once again be written by John Krasinski is in the earliest stages of development, but the stars of the film, which was produced by horror label Platinum Dunes and distributed by Paramount, have ideas of what they’d like to see.
Emily Blunt, who played pregnant matriarch Evelyn Abbott, stated:
“In some ways, the idea of seeing who these people were before this all happened would be interesting, but I’m not quite sure because I think actually it’s now what’s the next chapter and what happens next. I think people feel very invested in this family…. I think it’s such an open book right now, and certainly for John who is lasering into something as we speak.”
‘A Quiet Place’ marked Krasinski’s feature film directing debut, so obviously his involvement in the sequel was practically a given despite his character’s fate. Krasinski also played Lee Abbott, the husband of Blunt’s Evelyn and father of the kids Regan and Marcus. Considering that he is working on the sequel script, he might have further insight to offer. However, he was initially opposed to making another film in this saga, but has come around. As he explained:
“This is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake…. it’s actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience. It’s not like Alien or Jaws where the main villain is the thing you’re repeating; it’s an actual entire set of rules and the circumstance that the world has undergone that you can play in very different facets.”
Krasinski had previously expressed that he wanted to examine who was on the other end of those fire smoke signals that the humans lit each night as a way of checking in on each other. That would be fascinating, for sure, but at this point, the audience is attached to the Abbotts and wants to see what happens next after the first film’s slightly cliffhanger-y ending.
One of the main characters at the end of the film was Regan, the Abbott’s eldest child, played by hearing-impaired actor Millicent Simmonds. What does she want to see in the follow-up? A couple of different things, it turns out.
“One would be looking into the past. Like, how did the aliens come about?” She also expressed a desire to see another family “working on the same problems… The third idea would be the future: You know, what is the world like after, once the kids are older? Or what happens to the aliens or how do we improve or solve that problem?”
