Liz Gorinsky

It often feels that there just aren’t enough quality science fiction and fantasy publishing companies these days. That is about to change as former Tor Books editor Liz Gorinsky has opened the doors to Erewhon Books. The company is putting a focus on the types of genre prose fiction which we love and plans on launching its first titles in 2020.

For those unfamiliar with Gorinsky, she has had seven nominations for the Hugo Awards category Best Editor (Long Form) and won the award in 2017. Her role in the new company will be president and publisher and is planned to be joined by editorial assistant Jillian Feinberg and Peter Burri. Burry is the founder of The Experiment which is an independent press, and he will serve as a business advisor to this new venture.

The company is being funded by “families with over fifty years of publishing experience and are committed to the long-term growth of the company” and plans on having distribution for their upcoming works to be handled by Workman Publishing.

According to Gorinsky:

“I started to learn about science fiction and fantasy at Tor Books as an intern, but I’ve loved those genres ever since I started reading. I’ve been honored to publish many beautiful SF&F books that have been best-selling, Award-nominated, critically acclaimed (or all three!), and I’m thrilled to carry on my work with the many great authors in this genre and build the special attention and individual approach that a boutique independent publisher can provide.”

Some of Gorinsky’s past work for Tor included editing for authors such as Catherynne M. Valente, Annalee Newitz, Cherie Priest, and Jeff VanderMeer (‘Annihilation‘). The new publisher is currently open to submissions and is open to both agents and authors sending in their work.
