The character Number One has an interesting backstory. For the original ‘Star Trek’ pilot, creator Gene Roddenberry cast his girlfriend Majel Barrett in the role, who acts as the second-in-command to USS Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike. Because Barrett was relatively unknown at the time, the choice was met with backlash from the network. They passed on the first pilot and offered Roddenberry the chance to make another one. He dropped the character of Number One altogether.

‘Star Trek Discovery’ will take a chance on the ill-fated character, making Romijn the second-in-command to Anson Mount’s Captain Pike. ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will also star Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Saru, Anthony Rapp as Paul Samets and Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, and Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler. Stand-up comedian Tig Notaro was confirmed as a surprise guest star, playing Chief Engineer Denise Reno of the USS Hiawatha.

‘Star Trek Discovery’ premieres on CBS All-Access on January 17, 2019. Check out the trailer that debuted at New York Comic Con below!
