While we’ve all lived through constant terrible live-action adaptations of video game properties, I can’t help but hold out hope that ‘Mega Man‘ is going to be different. Just announced, this film is coming thanks to a deal between Capcom and 20th Century Fox which was previously rumored just in time to get it into production prior to the Walt Disney Studios buyout. A creative team is already in place with the duo of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman set to write and direct the film. The two previously have worked on two “Paranormal Activity” films as well as the ‘Catfish’ documentary. On the production side, we’ll see things being handled by Chemin Entertainment (‘Planet of the Apes’) and Masi Oka (‘Heroes’).
Capcom has shared:
“Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.”
The video game franchise was born in 1987 and has sold over 32 million games over the decades. It also spawned an animated feature, and the character has appeared in quite a few other games as well.
“In the 30 years following its launch, the series has spawned numerous spin-offs, which altogether still enjoy the support of a deeply passionate fan base, consisting of everyone from younger players to hardcore gamers alike. Further, the Mega Man brand has been utilized in a wide variety of mediums around the globe, such as in character merchandise, comic books, animated television shows and movies.”
With Sega pushing a live-action ‘Sonic the Hedgehog‘ movie into production, so it feels like many of our 80s classics are getting a fresh coat of paint for the big screen. At this rate, we’re just waiting for Nintendo to once again try a ‘Mario Brothers’ film or perhaps give ‘The Legends of Zelda’ a try.
