Titans

With just a week before ‘Titans’ premieres on DC Universe, the new direct-to-consumer streaming service that caters to DC Comics fans, a new trailer has been released.  It’s a short one and the formatting is weird.  It seems like it was specifically made to watch on a smartphone.  There also isn’t much new footage, but it does showcase each of the four heroes that comprise the team – Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin, Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth/Raven, Anna Diop as Koriand’r/Starfire and Ryan Potter as Garfield Logan/Beast Boy.  The clip is also ominously scored with a cover version of the song ‘Cry Little Sister’ from the soundtrack of the 1987 vampire flick ‘The Lost Boys’.  Considering that ‘Titans’ is centered around characters that are “lost” and trying to find their proper place in the world, that is fitting.

DC had a theatrical screening of the pilot episode of ‘Titans’ on Wednesday night.  This will mark the first original live action series from DC Universe, to be followed by ‘Doom Patrol’‘Swamp Thing’‘Stargirl’ and possibly the recently announced ‘Batgirl’, plus animated series ‘Young Justice: Outsiders’ and ‘Harley Quinn’.

Although it hasn’t yet premiered on DC Universe, ‘Titans’ has already been renewed for a second season.  And of course, it has already spawned a spin-off, with ‘Doom Patrol’.  The pilot episode of ‘Titans’ will be available on October 12.  Unlike Netflix and other services, DC Universe will only be offering one new episode a week, on Friday.  This is the same tactic CBS All Access took with ‘Star Trek: Discovery’.  Both are fledgling streaming services and can’t afford for people to sign up for a trial membership and only stream this one series in its entirety and then cancel.  Also like CBS All Access, DC Universe has struck a deal with Netflix to distribute the show outside of the United States, which gives the service a cash infusion to help offset the high cost of producing original content.

The first episode of ‘Titans’ will be available on October 12, with new episodes every Friday.
