Ryan Reynolds will remain in the realm of video games. After voicing the lead character in ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’, he will team with ‘Stranger Things’ executive producer and director Shawn Levy for ‘Free Guy’ in which Reynolds will star as a background character who realizes he lives in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.
Speaking of video game movies, Levy is also attached to direct the ‘Uncharted’ movie with Tom Holland portraying a young Nathan Drake. Levy is a director and executive producer of ‘Stranger Things’ and has helmed the ‘Night at the Museum’ movies, as well as features such as ‘Date Night’ and ‘Real Steel’.
The script will be penned by Matt Lieberman, who wrote the screenplays for the animated ‘The Addams Family’, ‘Monster on the Hill’, the live action/animation hybrid ‘Scooby’ and the reboot of ‘Short Circuit’.
George Dewey is also attached to executive produce, while Reynolds (through his Maximum Effort label) and Levy (through his 21 Laps) will also produce along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner.
‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’ is in post-production, and is due out on May 10, 2019. Reynolds is currently filming the Netflix original movie ‘6 Underground’ with Michael Bay directing. Fox has announced that a new ‘Deadpool’ movie is coming out on December 21st of this year, but it appears that it may simply be a re-edit of ‘Deadpool 2’, which wouldn’t require much work from Reynolds. He will also lend his voice to ‘The Croods 2’ and is currently expected to appear in ‘Deadpool 3’ and ‘X-Force’ from Fox, provided they get made before Disney takes over the ‘X-Men’ brand from Fox, the sequel ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ and a film version of the board game ‘Clue’.
It’s not clear where Reynolds will find time to fit another movie into his busy schedule. Fox is also home to ‘Free Guy’ which it bought as a spec script in 2016.
