It’s unclear when ‘Stargirl’, the most recently announced live-action series from DC Universe, is being eyed to start production.  It was just announced last month at San Diego Comic-Con, by Geoff Johns, the inventor of the comic book character, so it could still be years away from materializing.

In the meantime, here is the latest bit of news to surface.  Here is the description of the lead character, also known as Courtney Whitmore and it sounds like they are sticking fairly close to the comic book.

“The series is looking to cast an 18+-year-old actress, of any ethnicity, to play a 15-year-old Courtney. Described as an intelligent, compassionate and athletic young woman, Courtney is witty as well as an incredible kind individual who is living a perfect teenage life in Los Angeles, California. However, her life is completely changed when her mom gets married. Because of this, Courtney is forced to leave her life in L.A. behind as she moves to Blue Valley, Nebraska with Courtney’s mom’s new husband and his family. While she struggles to adjust to life in Nebraska, from attending a new school to living with a step-family, Courtney’s life is forever changed when she discovers that her stepdad has a big secret. He used to be a superhero’s sidekick and Courtney takes it upon herself to “borrow” this superhero’s cosmic staff which leads Courtney to become a surprising inspiration as she leads a brand new generation of superheroes!”

These cast listings always say they are looking for any ethnicity, but they always wind up using a white actor.

The only major difference from the comics is that Courtney finds the cosmic rod instead of her original high tech belt which gave her her powers.  The belt was actually built based on the cosmic rod, so this is probably a simpler answer.

Her stepfather, Pat Dugan, was the adult sidekick to teenage superhero Star-Spangled Kid, in a reversal of the usual superhero mentor-sidekick trope.  Originally, neither had superpowers.  After being rescued from being lost in time in the 1970s, retired hero Starman gave Star-Spangled Kid (Sylvester Pemberton) his cosmic rod, which Pemberton retooled into a belt that gave him limited super strength and the ability to project energy.

Courtney originally used the belt and went by the Star-Spangled Kid name, but after the son of the original Starman gave her another cosmic rod, she changed her name to Stargirl to serve as a legacy to both heroes.

In the comics, Pat used to chaperone Courtney on her exploits, by wearing in a giant suit of armor, but we’ll have to wait and see if that happens on the show.

STARGIRL follows High School sophomore Courtney Whitmore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series premiering in 2019, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.
