When bad-guy-turned-good Ralph and glitch-no-more Vanellope take to the big screen again in this Fall’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet,’ they’ll have a large cast of friends and allies on the journey with them. Some are new faces, but many are eminently recognizable, including a whole slew of Disney Princesses!
In the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ film, all the action was contained to an arcade where games were connected by their power cords – but everything was “offline” from the world wide web. In the new sequel, that has changed, as our main characters head online to try and find a replacement for Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush. As director Phil Johnston put it in a recent interview:
“Every different person has a different experience with the Internet, regardless of age, and we felt it was a ripe world to push the boundaries of their friendship. Vanellope’s been in the Internet all of one minute and she immediately gets it. And Ralph takes it personally as an affront to him. With Ralph, it’s like when your dad looks at the Internet and goes, ‘What is that? Why is that? What is going on?’”
In addition to Vanellope meeting up with Disney’s most famous royal ladies, there are a few new faces making their debut in the movie. One is Yesss (that’s right, three Ss), voiced by Taraji P. Henson. Of her character, Henson speaks very highly:
“Just putting her with Ralph as a foil and a friend was a lot of fun. [She is] a little snooty because she is smart and she does know the Internet so well. But then she kind of takes a liking to the big lug. There’s something about a really smart person empowering someone who is not as intelligent — it’s like, ‘Wow, see, I’m so good even I can teach you something.’”
Alan Tudyk returns to the franchise voicing another new character, KnowsMore – the personification of an online search engine. Since the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ Tudyk has done voice work for every Disney animated film, a streak Johnston says is intentional:
“[Alan] became our good-luck charm of sorts. [KnowsMore is] a little Truman Capote, a little Droopy dog from the old MGM cartoons, and a little Mr. Peabody.”
‘Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet’ is headed to US theaters on November 21, 2018.
