This series will be based on the trilogy by Justin Cronin and fans have been wanting to see this released for quite some time. In fact, back in 2011, Matt Reeves almost created a movie trilogy based off of the franchise but that fell through.
Instead, Fox decided to shoot a pilot for a television show last year but that particular version fell through too but the network was so keen on the property, they reworked the script, reshot the pilot with Jason Ensler in the director’s chair, and finally ordered the project to series.
The pitch which is being used for the show is as follows:
The Passage is an epic, character-driven thriller about a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race. The series focuses on a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), who is chosen to be a test subject for this experiment, and Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her.
I’m sure you can guess part of what this virus will end up doing to humanity with the vampires.
Elizabeth Heldens (‘Friday Night Lights’,’Mercy’) wrote the screenplay for the pilot and is part of the producing team which also includes Reeves, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and Adam Kassan. We haven’t been given an indication yet as to how they plan on breaking these novels up into ongoing seasons.
