Well, if dark medieval fantasy is not your preference, George R.R. Martin might have something else to interest you besides his wildly popular ‘Game of Thrones’ series over on HBO. He is also teaming up with Syfy to bring his novel ‘Nightflyers’ to life, which is set to premiere this fall on the science fiction network with a 10 episode order.
Martin himself describes the show in the First Look as “‘Psycho’ in space,” though the show-runner Jeff Buhler recently stated in another interview that he prefers to think of the series as more of “either ‘Alien‘ with a ghost or ‘The Shining’ in space,” but the idea here is a show about space horror.
Check out the First Look for yourself below. The minute long video gives a good insight into the general tone and premise of the new series which is set about 75 years in the future where the starship ‘Nightflyer’ makes contact with an alien race and things go terribly awry, leading to the epic distress beacon telling anyone who finds the ship to not board and not bring it back to Earth.
The First Look also reveals that the set of the ship is MASSIVE! There appears to be a lot of action, flames, zero-G stunt-work, and what looks to be a lot of on-set special effects, which will be nice as opposed to a lot of CGI (though we did not see any of the aforementioned aliens, which might be where all the CGI budget went). It might be worth checking it out if the quality comes close to this First Look, especially if Martin himself is involved in the series and it is based off one of his books.
‘Nightflyers’ stars Gretchen Mol, Eoin Macken, David Ajala and Sam Strike, and will premiere in the fall season on Syfy. Feel free to share your thoughts on the new series in the comments below!
