Seth MacFarlane’s ongoing tribute to “Star Trek” continues to emulate the franchise as ‘The Orville’ has added another writer who has worked in the Trek universe. Joe Menosky will be writing at least one of the upcoming episodes of ‘The Orville’ and if that name sounds familiar, you may recognize his work from ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation.’ Or possibly ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘, or hey, why not ‘Star Trek: Voyager‘, perhaps even from the recent ‘Star Trek Discovery‘? That’s right folks, Menosky has penned 34 episodes over four different generations of “Star Trek” and has given us many solid episodes as well.
When it comes to ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ he was responsible for “Darmok” which is often cited as one of the best episodes of the series. It should also be noted that Brannon Braga is an executive producer on ‘The Orville’ and was often Menosky’s writing partner on ‘Star Trek: Voyager.’
The news slipped through the cracks and was announced early when Ivy Thaide, a costume designer on ‘The Orville’ accidentally shared the details on Instagram in a post which was taken down where she shared a call sheet which listed Menosky in the co-executive producers/writers area.
I love that MacFarlane is mining all of this classic “Star Trek” talent for ‘The Orville.’ I’m still waiting for a way for him to spoof a Mirror Universe setup and somehow bring in the entire bridge crew of one of the “Star Trek” franchises as a new crew that somehow fits in the world which he’s built.
Are you thrilled that someone who was responsible for 34 “Star Trek” episodes will be penning at least one of the upcoming installments of ‘The Orville’? Do you feel that MacFarlane should continue trying to attract this kind of talent or look for some newer voices? Share your thoughts below!
